In considering the essential problem of how to produce and distribute material wealth, virtually all of the great economists in Western history have ignored the significance of the commons—the shared resources of nature and society that people inherit, create and utilize. Despite sharp differences in concept and ideology, economic thinkers from Smith, Ricardo, and Marx to Keynes, Hayek, Mises and Schumpeter[Read More...]

Guest post by Inshah Malik Iran is politically and economically isolated and in that isolation, to call it an experiment of nation building is misleading, but nevertheless, it is an on-going exercise. Under the crippling sanctions, the party is still on! I don’t have the usual agenda to visit Iran. I’m not an intrepid western traveler … Continue reading In the Forbidden Land of Iran – the past, survival and imperial nostalgia: Inshah Malik

Hymn 130
Love and hatred. Phil. 2:2; Eph. 4:30, etc.
Now by the bowels of my God,
His sharp distress, his sore complaints,
By his last groans, his dying blood,
I charge my soul to love the saints.
Russia has confirmed that President Vladimir Putin will observe the Zapad military drills which are already under way. The Zapad or ‘west’ drills will take place in three western regions of Russia included the Leningrad region as well as in parts of Belarus which forms an allied Union State with the Russian Federation.
When the United States and some of its allies in 2003 invaded and destroyed Iraq on false pretenses — and without Iraq having ever invaded (much less destroyed) any of the invading countries — this was actually within the scope of the invaders being liberal countries, because a nation’s sovereignty isn’t at all respected in traditional liberal thought. This also is the reason why some of the same nations invaded and destroyed Libya in 2011, and Syria since 2012.
When Nikki Haley, now the United States ambassador to the United Nations, was questioned by senators at her confirmation hearing in January about how she would deal with Donald Trump’s dismissive view of internationalism, she said confidently, “I will show him that the UN matters.”
After presiding over a National Security Council meeting in the aftermath of North Korea’s latest missile launch, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said that he is now faced with an “impossible situation”.
He then stated,
Analysts of world affairs tend to fall into certain traps concerning the motivations and behavior of political actors. We consistently look at politicians’ electoral support, states’ access to resources, lines of offense or defense, traditional alliances and enmities, the profits of empowered interests, geography, demography, and many other objective factors.
So-called American values have done more harm to more people worldwide over a longer duration than any other nation in world history – a legacy of endless wars of aggression, predatory corporate empowerment and post-9/11 tyranny, nothing to be proud of.

A national security report adopted by Bulgaria’s cabinet has just been sent to lawmakers for consideration. It is yet to be debated by the parliament’s committee and in plenary. The document named Russia as one of the main foreign policy risks. This is the first time a Bulgarian government openly calls Russia a threat to the country’s national security. According to the document signed by PM Boyko Borisov, “the actions of Russia as a source of regional instability also threaten our basic goal of a united, free and peaceful Europe”.
Guest Post by SHRIPAD DHARMADHIKARY AND NANDINI OZA Reposted from Manthan What can one expect when one is faced with a blog by “India’s leading economic journalist” which is titled “Most of the ousted tribals are flourishing and loving it”? That there will be a large helping of fries on the side?
John Harrison of Sputnik radio's Level Talk invited Matt and I on to talk about National Security Cinema and the relationship between Hollywood and Washington.
-by NoahWhat! You haven't had enough of the Republican Party's "Trickle Down Economics?" Well, as Repug icon Ronald Reagan would say, "there you go again." Now that Paul Ryan and his House of Lunatics are back in session, they are planning on what they cynically refer to as "tax reform." Why? Because pirates like Trump and Ryan stand to personally gain, both in income and campaign contributions (bribes).

A number of public statements recently released by the White House about the so-called “new plan” aimed at destroying ISIS has repeatedly stressed that the top priority of the Trump administration is the destruction of this terrorist group, with a particular emphasis being placed on Syria.
Former US President Jimmy Carter blasted US President Trump on his handing of North Korea.
Speaking at a ‘Conversation with the Carters’ event, Jimmy Carter said…
“The first thing I would do is treat the North Koreans with respect.”
“I know what the North Koreans want,” he said.
“What they want is a firm treaty guaranteeing North Korea that the US will not attack them or hurt them in any way, unless they attack one of their neighbors.” Carter said,
“But the United States has refused to do that.”

Yanis Varoufakis begins his account of his half year as Greece’s finance minister in the left populist Syriza government (Adults in the Room, Farrar, Straus, and Giroux) with a description of a meeting with Larry Summers. They can just occasionally accomplish things by persuading others in the room to take their advice.
