Who Was Las Vegas Shooter Stephen Paddock and What Was His Motive?
Eric Paddock says his brother Stephen was “not an avid gun guy at all” and “something happened” to make him kill 58 people. “Where the hell did he get automatic weapons? He has no military background or anything like that,” he said.
“He has no political affiliation, no religious affiliation, as far as we know. This wasn’t a terror attack.”

Protectionism Isn't Patriotism
President Trump has long wrapped his protectionist rhetoric in our flag, as necessary for America to "win" again. However, the idea that "good" American producers should be preferred over "bad" foreign producers for the good of our country gets backward who American consumers' friends and enemies are when it comes to international trade.

If the Republican Tax Plan Is Bad for Donald Trump, Then It's Bad for All of Us
Despite the truth that there’s no economic progress without growth capital that the rich have more of than anyone else, the allegedly growth-oriented Republicans continue to run away from the kind of tax cuts that would do the most to boost the rich, and by extension enhance the investment that benefits everyone. The obvious reply to this is that the media would crucify them if they actually reduced the burden on those with real wealth, but they’re already crucifying them for allegedly writing up a “wish list” for the rich. In that case, why not – just once – do just that?

How Kurdish independence is central to Israel’s plans to reshape the region
Israel's support for the Kurdish independence referendum was not surprising. The unravelling of Britain and France’s century-old map of the region would lead to chaos of the kind that a strong, nuclear-armed Israel could richly exploit. Not least, yet more bedlam would push the Palestinian cause even further down the international community’s list of priorities.

The Bad Old Days of Paying Bills
My father was a happy person. But on the first or last Saturday of the month, every month, he was miserable. He would wake in a grumpy mood, say nothing at breakfast, listen to no one around him, and at 10am, would slump into the small wood paneled room he called his office. He would gather piles of mail around him, dig through to find his books, heave a big sigh and get to work. It was time to “pay bills.”

Let's Turn To The Tax Reform Plan-- Trump Is Lying Again
Is Chris Wallace allowed to say this on Fox News Sunday: "But Director Mulvaney, independent experts say what the president just said there isn't true." Obviously he could have been talking about Putin-Gate, about Trump's spat with the NRA, about Puerto Rico, about anything at all Trump has said to the public... ever. But he was talking about the Trump/Ryan tax plan. Remember Bruce Bartlett, a Jack Kemp economist who was one of the Reagan advisors responsible for the mythical Reagan tax cuts.

Rising dollar chips at stellar year for emerging markets
Asian and emerging markets have adapted to the prospects of the Fed increasing interest rates [Xinhua]

Do unity moves put Hamas back in the driving seat in Gaza?
Renewed moves towards reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah are being hailed by PA officials as a victory for Abbas after he imposed harsh sanctions on Gaza over the summer to punish Hamas. But experts argue that the drive for unity puts Hamas - not Abbas - in the driving seat, by helping it find a way out of regional isolation.

A Cuban Mystery: The US Embassy in Havana
Cuba has, for decades, been a form of political pathology for US political consciousness. Fidel Castro loomed in his indestructible guise, tormenting a succession of American presidents with his seeming indestructibility. Efforts at deposing and assassination had conspicuously failed. It was left, then, to Washington to insulate, seal off and keep Cuba as an infectious patient of international relations, fearing[Read More...]
