It took a natural calamity, Hurricane Maria, to wake Puerto Ricans up to the fact that, as far as Donald Trump and his administration are concerned, Puerto Rico is merely a far-flung colonial possession separated from the mainland US by, as Trump put it, “a thing called the Atlantic Ocean...”

With his recent flurry of despicable statements directed towards NFL (and NBA) athletes, Trump has firmly drawn his line of division, not in sand, but in cement.Who says Trump has achieved nothing?

The nature of the rhetoric in Donald Trump’s first speech at the United Nations General Assembly was largely predictable. Even his bizarre threat to “totally destroy North Korea” was consistent with his overall style and previous warnings. But how different was his speech, if compared with the first and last UN speeches of President Barack Obama? A 19th Century English author, John Ruskin, once wrote,[Read More...]

The “insanity” label that America attaches to North Korea has a lot of political utility. First, it colors the interpretation of everything North Korea does. The consideration of a rational motivation for undesirable actions can be prevented: the actions are assumed to be crazy. Secondly, it makes the target of blame clear. Thirdly, and most … Continue reading "North Korea’s Rational Nuclear Strategy"
The laziness of journalists is legendary. I'm probably not an optimal Facebook consumer but I never even noticed there are any ads on Facebook and I don't spend much time on their platform anyway. My own Facebook page just automatically posts my twitter feed and helps me communicate with folks who can't be bothered to check out my blog. I'm sure if I paid attention I'd see the ads. But I'm good at blocking out ads. Still, there's something enraging about Putin's use of Facebook ads to influence voters in the 2016 presidential election.

(ANTIMEDIA) Washington, D.C. — It’s rare that we get a glimpse into how the machine actually operates, but POLITICO just gave us one. The findings of an investigation by the news agency, published Monday, reveal that congressional staffers may play a far larger role in greasing the engine of American government than one might assume. From the article by Maggie Severns:
The Catalan push for independence from Spain appears to be part of a larger European – and possibly worldwide – movement away from larger, more distant governance and toward more local control. Elsewhere in Europe, the old order is slowly breaking down. New parties find success in German elections, Hungary continues to defy Brussels on immigration, talk of secession on all levels increases. Will the referendum in Catalonia take place as scheduled, or will the central government successfully crack down? Will a crack-down eliminate the growing demand for independence? What’s the US position?
