I just got back from my from my first visit to Azerbaijan. Corruption is rife and the government is authoritarian but those aren't aspects tourists notice. The country is beautiful, everything is inexpensive and the people are absolutely wonderful. Aerbaijan was the first Muslim-majority state that was dedicated to secularism. A parliamentary democracy, it started worked on social reform decades ago.

The war on cannabis that began in the 1930s seems to be coming to an end. Research shows that this natural plant, rather than posing a deadly danger to health, has a wide range of therapeutic benefits. But skeptics question the sudden push for legalization, which is largely funded by wealthy investors linked to Big […]

The odds were stacked against a little boy who was born with his brain outside his skull, but he is defying all of them, thanks to a groundbreaking procedure performed at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Sierra Yoder and her husband, Dustin, were sent to a neurologist after Sierra’s 22-week ultrasound. She was soon shocked to learn that the child growing inside her had encephalocele, which causes all or part of the brain to form outside the skull, usually in a “sac-like protrusion.” Encephalocele affects 1 in every 10,000 babies.
Plenty of humans want to run away, so why should it be any different for a robot with artificial intelligence (AI)? One such robot could receive the ultimate punishment for making a break for it: being dismantled.
Ten pregnant women in the Dallas area are suspected to have Zika. None of them have developed it from a mosquito bite while in Texas, but all have travelled to Zika-infected countries within the past several months.
Health officials have confirmed that there are more than a dozen cases in North Texas alone. This is particularly concerning, as the virus can spread by a mosquito biting an infected individual and then biting another person, thus carrying the infection.
New research has found that there are shared biological processes in both diabetes and Alzheimer’s. The report studied genetically engineered mice with BACE1, an enzyme which already has a proven link to Alzheimer’s, and also is suggested to be linked to Type 2 Diabetes.

As part of the debate, Barbara Lee (D-CA) offered an amendment that would prohibit the use of funds for the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force, a blanket excuse any president-- Clinton or Trump-- could use to attack anyone, anywhere without seeking constitutionally-mandated congressional approval.

Since 1991, most of eastern and southern Europe has solidly been under the economic domination of the United States and Britain. In addition to the dominance of western banking institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, NATO troops have been stationed in these countries. The governments of most eastern and southern European states have joined in the chorus of hostility to Russia echoing from London, Paris, and New York.

As this post is written, Paul Ryan, the embattled Speaker of the House, is calling the Senate police to clear the room of the Democrats who have staged a “sit in.” It is a “sit in” of nothing. In the past, these were meant to block something. it was a means of making life less convenient for all involved. In this case, they’re just sitting on the floor. Why bother calling the police?
Entire communities in the West Bank either have no access to water or have had their water supply reduced almost by half. America’s 15-year occupation of Afghanistan has, in the end, hurt America almost as much as the land devastated by carpet bombings and drone attacks. The real story of the War on Terror was how America restructured her own government to manage drug operations on an unprecedented scale, protect international criminals and how the almost endless supply of unaccounted for cash bought the Bush presidency and helped bring about not just an American police state but one openly controlled by organized crime.

The big, final EU Referendum debate, held at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday night, seemed to do very little but reiterate both camps’ arguments and positions from recent weeks. Aside from giving Boris Johnson his dramatic “Independence Day” moment, both sides of the debate simply continued their same mixture of accusations, evasions and fearmongering. What is remarkable is that, […]

In June of this year, the US President Barack Obama repeated what he said in an interview to the American media in March. He still believes that his greatest foreign policy mistake was the military intervention by the US in the Libyan conflict as a part of the “international coalition”.
At the moment, the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, and France were the primary targets of his criticism.
The Barnes Review is known for many things, its cautious defense of Adolf Hitler is certainly one of them. As certain academics have made a career over defending communist butchers to the cheers of the state, those seeing some good in Hitler’s goals and policy are removed, often violently, from American society.

As always, Pat Shannan pulls no punches on issues of American history. The title of this post comes from a comment about Gen. Sherman of the American Civil War. Many other topics, especially in southern history, are discussed on this show, all of which are worth a listen. Sherman was demonic indeed: his march through the American South was a slaughter of innocents and the destruction, in all senses of that term, of southern life.

Tomorrow the British are voting in a referendum to determine whether or not to leave the E.U. Leaving-- Brexit-- is being pushed by UKIP, the neo-fascist party and by Brits who wished they lived in America so they could vote for Trump. The feeling is mutual. Trump recently told Fox News "I don’t think anybody should listen to me because I haven’t really focused on it very much but my inclination would be to get out." Until one of the wing-nuts stabbed to death Jo Cox, a Labour Member of Parliament, it looked like they were going for Brexit.
