BBC reporter Kirsty Wark is taking heat today on social networks and blogs for the hostile questions in her interview with Glenn Greenwald. It’s unnecessary. Wark’s questions are perfect in their assumption of every obvious objection someone in power might have regarding the NSA revelation. Above is Greenwald slicing, dicing, filleting the conceits of journalism under empire.

Nunes calls teabaggers "lemmings with suicide vests"-- but he votes with them 100% of the timeNo one ever accused Devin Nunes of being a "moderate." He's a hardcore conservative whose political career has been financed by the insurance industry, corporate agriculture and Big Pharma. Although his San Joaquin Valley district (CA-22) is increasingly Hispanic, the voters are still Republican enough there for him to not have to worry about Democrats seriously challenging him.
The IPCC is showing typical signs of middle age, including weight gain, a growing rigidity of viewpoint, and overconfidence in its methods. It did a great job in the early days, but it’s become ritualized and bureaucratic, issuing big bulk … Continue reading →

Last year Kyrsten Sinema (New Dem-AZ) tried appealing to out-of-district progressives while claiming to be a centrist in AZ-09. Obama beat McCain and Romney in the district; it's not a red district. This week Sinema, one of the Democrats who votes most frequently with the Republican on crucial roll calls, has been claiming that both parties are at fault over the government shut down. "Arizonans are angry and I don't blame them," she said Tuesday.

This may be a propitious moment to offer an up-to-date version of a classic riddle: Which came first, the chicken or the terrorist? For many in this country, the Kenyan mall horror arrived out of the blue, out of nowhere, out of a place and a time without context. Next thing you know, it’s all […]
In the last month, the U. S. government has reversed course on its intention to attack Syria, and conveyed the impression that it wants to mitigate Washington’s long-term hostility toward Iran. How AIPAC Lost Its Grip
by MJ Rosenberg

Let's take a look at the 3 bills Boehner and Cantor put together as part of their strategy of just funding the parts of government they agree with (while cutting off the governmental functions-- like Social Security and Medicare-- they hate). Tuesday they offered 3 with no hearings or debate and they needed 2/3 to pass. All three failed.

Fresh clashes have erupted in Syria between secular rebels and Al CIAda-linked extremists. It’s the latest spate of infighting among the anti-Assad camp, which has seen a rapid rise of radicals in their numbers. Western analysts put the total number of rebels at around a hundred thousand. They’re split into as many as a thousand different groups. Ten thousand fighters are radical jihadists with links to Al CIAda. Up to 35 thousand others are hardline Islamists, who share many of Al CIAda’s views. That leaves the more moderate terrorists vastly outnumbered.
