I saw the heart of the state’s logic laid bare before my eyes. If the state authority says something is illegal, who are we to say no? It is shocking, in the eyes of ordinary citizens, for a person to say, “No, if a law outlaws blue pens, I will not lock someone inside a human cage to punish their disobedience.”

I think if Amazon wants to improve the quality of product pages, it should end its campaign against incentivized reviews, as it only serves to hurt established brands. Increased transparency could instead allow consumers to make their own judgments about whom to trust.

Senator John McCain recently warned of Trump's "America first" rhetoric, describing it as "half-baked, spurious nationalism." But every time McCain grandstands in front of Congress in an attempt to escalate conflict abroad, he is making the same argument for “blood and soil,” that these new nationalists make.
A lot of Republicans, when they work up the nerve to criticize Señor Trumpanzee, try to couch the criticism in a paean to the greatness of his judiciary and cabinet picks. First of all, he doesn't care how criticism is couched; he'll be looking for an opportunity at revenge sooner or later-- and it won't be pretty-- and, second, his personnel selections are among his worst and most existentially risky decisions, not his saving grace.
First, I was busy the last two days fixing a major computer problem... Apparently shortly after I posted my weekend rant., my main computer crashed and it took a lot of effort until yesterday to have it fixed.... I do wonder if I either picked up a nasty bug in the system or someone out there does not like me?Yes, it has been a while since I last put up a report on the real situation in Syria....
Syria is a special country and most Syrians are conscious of that. It is not an abstraction to the people who live there. Having dinner in a hotel restaurant in Damascus, we met a Syrian couple who expressed their own knowledge that Syria was a special country on every level and how they were themselves tied to that land in a way in which most people would have no understanding. Truly, the blood of the land runs in their veins.

Ever since the defeat of Hillary Clinton in 2016, Silicon Valley firms like Google and Facebook – all of who backed Hillary Clinton and ploughed huge sums of money into her losing campaign – have been on a mission to try and marginalise and disappear alternative news content which runs counter to the mainstream party line.

This may be one of the cruelest and most cynical moves of Washington in its entire dark "regime change Syria" chapter. Serbian media sources are reporting, based on quotes from US Embassy Belgrade personnel, that the United States has sought and been given assurances by the Serbian government and military that Serbian de-mining experts will not be deploying to Syria to assist in removing the ubiquitous horrific mines and other explosive devices left behind by a retreating ISIS.
Empires of scale are often spread thinly across fields of operations. Vast, often opaque functions on the ground are not necessarily conveyed with accuracy to the metropolitan centre. Command structures, for all the sophistication of instant modern communication, do not eliminate human error, let alone enlighten. The four US army deaths in Niger have been shrouded by the bickering unfolding[Read More...]
If the mission is to prevent the North Korean capability to strike continental USA and an operation is unavoidable, then Donald Trump will have nothing to lose. If it is a question of not if but when, then there is no reason for delay.

The West’s persistent demonization of Russia over the past decade has pushed Moscow into a de facto alliance with China, changing the geopolitical landscape in ways that U.S. pundits still won’t admit, writes Gilbert Doctorow.

The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) concludes tomorrow following week-long sessions in which President Xi Jinping outlined his priorities for the next five years.
The Communist Party’s 2,000 delegates on Tuesday inserted Xi Jinping “Thought” into its constitution, effectively making the president the most powerful man in China.
Trump's decision will have positive effects in the short term for Washington's relations with Middle-Eastern allies. In the medium to long term, it may signal a parting of ways of European and American foreign policy
GMOs. Scientists can, and should, keep debating the dangerousness and unpredictability of genetical interference in food production, the effects of GMOs on pesticide usage and its possible relation to cancer and other diseases. On a more fundamental level, however, the most important question is the following: why would we even want genetically modified instead of organic food on our plate?

Ever since ISIS appeared in Iraq in 2014, both the policies and strategies coming out of Washington have ranged from confused to inept, as politicians and Pentagon officials spar over whether or not to cooperate with various Iranian-affiliated Shia militias and People’s Mobilization Units (PMF), led by Hash d’ al-Shaabi and Badr Organisation.
Those aren’t the words of Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders. They’re from someone who watched his nation get hammered first by a financial crisis not solely of its own making and then by a heavy-handed international push to bully his government into accepting draconian spending cuts that ravaged the lives of millions of his fellow citizens.

Dysfunctional GOP by Nancy OhanianYesterday Ryan brought policy expert Donald J Trumpanzee to persuade the Freedom Caucus and other far right sociopaths that the Senate-passed budget is something they need to get behind.
