The Independence Day of Georgia was marked in Afghanistan too. A solemn ceremony was organized at the Leatherneck base in Helmand Province. The Independence Day was celebrated by the military personnel of 42 and 33 light infantry battalions all together.
The Supreme Commander-in-Chief Mikheil Saakashvili congratulated the Georgian military deployed in Afghanistan on the Independence Day as well as awarded them. “St. George`s Victory Order” was granted to COL Koba Akhvlediani. Vakhtang Gorgasali III rank Order was handed over to LTC Zaza Tsamalashvili and Vakhtang Gorgasali II rank Order to Major Irakli Kalandadze. The Medal of “Military Bravery” was granted to the following servicemen: Sergeant Giorgi Bikoshvili, Senior Sergeant Giorgi Tsalani, Private Khvicha Musharbadze and Major Zurab Zaqaria.
Service medals were awarded to 32 military servicemen. Two military servants were granted with the Medal “General Kvinitadze” for Achieving Success in Combat Preparation and Maintaining High Combat Readiness of Troops.
The Medal “General Mazniashvili” was awarded to two soldiers for high professionalism revealed during planning and commanding successful military operations and large-scale trainings.
Medal “Devoted to Homeland” was bestowed on 28 military servicemen for the devotion revealed in defence of Georgia.
