Foreign Ministry says Basescu’s speech about Moldova’s union with Romania generated complications
Foreign minister Titus Corlatean criticized on Wednesday at Izvorul Muresului University president Traian Basescu’s statement referring to Romania’s union with Moldova. He said the speech of the head of state on the topic had already generated complications. Corlatean said the government works and supports Moldova’s European objectives and integration, but pointed out that an objective could be missed for the lack of political intelligence and wisdom.
“When you play with a topic such as the Union I want to understand whether you agree with me that the European and Romanian future of Moldova should be supported by political intelligence in a world of complicated international relations. We are working on solving problems such as Moldova’s energy independence. Many have spoken before but have done nothing. All these years were lost,” Corlatean said.
He added that president Basescu’s statements had already created complications both in Moldova and Romania’s government.“We are working to connect the electric grid, bridges, investments, but these are actions which might generate future realities and not rhetoric which may create foreign problems. The speech held two days ago generated additional complications to our Moldovan brothers, the government and us. We must try to get out of this kind of situation although it is not the first time,” said the foreign minister.
He pointed out that the Summit of the EU Eastern Partnership from Vilnius in November might mean a new history page for Moldova and Romania was closely with that state to reach objectives for European integration.
The foreign minister referred to Traian Basescu’s statement made at Izvorul Muresului University and prompted the citizens of Moldova to ask the union with Romania and they will have it.
“We are talking about Moldova’s union with Romania. I say, citizens of Moldova: Ask for the union and you will have it”, Basescu said.
