Comparing The Shanghai Cooperation Organization To The Mongol Empire
Alasdair Macleod the other day compared the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to the empire of Genghis Khan whose name in English is just Great Leader. The Mongol Empire reached its height under his grandson Kublai Khan. The Mongol Empire combined economic and military power into the hands of one man. The modern SCO works cooperatively as a competitor to NATO and the European Union. Ankara, the capitol of Turkey, is 4,806 miles (7,734.5 kilometers) from Shanghai.

Messy Endgame in the Afghan War
President Obama has announced that all U.S. forces will be withdrawn from Afghanistan by the end of 2016, just before he leaves office. By taking this action, Obama is finally saying "touché" to a military brass that he believed sandbagged him in upping the quantity of forces needed for the troop surge in Afghanistan when […]

Don’t Walk Away from War
Originally posted at TomDispatch. The United States has been at war – major boots-on-the-ground conflicts and minor interventions, firefights, air strikes, drone assassination campaigns, occupations, special ops raids, proxy conflicts, and covert actions – nearly nonstop since the Vietnam War began. That’s more than half a century of experience with war, American-style, and yet few […]

A Note to My Readers

Fire in the Minds of Men, book notes part 3, TRR#95
The booknotes series of podcasts on Fire in the Minds of Men: Origins of the Revolutionary Faith, by James H. Billington continues as Aaron reads more of his notes. Another "birth pangs" quote pops up, this time from Karl Marx. The revolutionary fire moves from Europe eastward into Russia as the nineteenth century begins to wane.

Guest Post: Marianne Williamson
I was heartbroken that so many of my friends-- almost entirely male-- refused to even consider Marianne Williamson in her congressional bid. It wasn't even entirely sexist, since some of them were willing to consider the entirely conventional political hack Wendy Greuel. Instead it has to do with Marianne's spiritual perspective, which I found not entirely unlike Martin Luther King's or Mahatma Gandhi's spiritual perspectives.

Danny Benavides | Carlos Rosales Mendoza, La Familia Michoacana founder and ally of Gulf Cartel druglord Osiel Cardenas Guillen, was recently released from prison in Mexico, with little press and seemingly little concern. World War II: The Unknown War
In my June 6 column, “The Lies Grow More Audacious,” I mentioned that Obama and the British prime minister, who Obama has as a lap dog, just as George Bush had Tony Blair as lap dog, had managed to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany at the 70th anniversary of the Normandy invasion without mentioning the Russians.
I pointed out the fact, well known to historians and educated people, that the Red Army -

The Iraq ( Chilcot ) Inquiry, And The Greatest Scandal Of Our Generation
When the inquiry does eventually comes out, and it could apparently ''criticize Blair.’ All I would ask is that we organize a 24-hour nonstop demonstration outside Blair's house in Connaught Sq London W2..A demonstration like those in Tahir square Cairo that not only protest but, as Tony Benn would have said 'Demands’ justice in a democracy.

Leaving the USS Liberty Crew Behind
Justifying the swap of Taliban prisoners for Sgt. Bergdahl, President Obama cited a principle of never leaving U.S. soldiers behind, but that rule was violated in the shabby treatment of the USS Liberty crew, attacked 47 years ago by Israeli warplanes, writes ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern.

Ukraine President Once Agent for U.S. State Department
The players and plans have been in place for years and it's all paid off. The White House and their masters finally have their insider in place in charge of Ukraine. It's worth listening to the assessment of former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John E. Herbst and his Deputy around the time they handled Poroshenko. The ambassador saw him as a "disgraced oligarch" and his deputy pointed out that "Poroshenko was tainted by credible corruption allegations."
Spreading brand democracy around the world is a tough job. Somebody's got to do it. -

Dispatching B-2 Stealth Bombers to Europe Obama’s Attempt at Intimidating Russia
Less than 24 hours after Ukraine’s new president Petro Poroshenko announced his determination to retake Crimea from Russia, US Admiral Cecil Haney confirmed that the US Air Force had deployed two B-2 stealth bombers to Europe to conduct military exercises. The addition of the multipurpose B-2, which is capable of delivering nuclear weapons, is intended to send a message to Moscow that the United States is prepared to provide backup for Ukraine’s fledgling government and to protect its interests in Central Asia.

Americans Favor Immigration Reform, So Who Doesn't? Fox Viewers, The Tea Party And Texas Republicans
CA-25 is the northeast corner of L.A. county-- Santa Clarita and the Antelope Valley-- plus a sliver of Ventura County (Simi Valley). It's a suburban area that has long been held by Republicans but in 2012 Lee Rogers won in the Antelope Valley and came closer to dislodging forever-incumbent Buck McKeon than anyone else ever had. So close, in fact, that McKeon decided to trade his job in Congress for a job on K Street this year.

Canada's duplicitous deceitful treachery on display. Democracy? In what reality?
Canada's PM made a point of being in attendance at the annointing of the Ukrainian Oligarch/Warlord/Puppet Poroshenko. Canada's government has been falling all over itself to support 'freedom' and the right of some people to choose their own destiny in the Ukraine. But only some people. PM Harper does not extend this right to NATO's targeted ones. Whether in Syria or Ukraine.

UN Could Prosecute Bush for War Crimes, Says Ex-U.S. Terror Czar
Former U.S. terror czar Richard Clarke (shown), who resigned in 2003, dropped two bombshell statements about the Bush administration he served during a recent TV interview. First, he said, former President George W. Bush and then-Vice President Dick Cheney probably perpetrated what amounts to “war crimes” surrounding the unconstitutional attack on Iraq. While plenty of Americans on all sides of the political spectrum might be inclined to agree, Clarke went even further.

Michael Douglas has been a generous political contributor over the years. He's given to real progressives like Dennis Kucinich, Howard Dean and Russ Feingold, to conservatives like Bob Kerrey, Joe Baca, Adam Schiff and Max Baucus, and to corporate career Dems like Hillary Clinton, Tom Daschle and Dick Gephardt. Mostly, though, he just likes Democrats and has given tens of thousands of dollars to Beltway Democratic committees like the DCC, DNC and the DSCC. In a letter he sent out yesterday-- on behalf of the Council for a Livable World-- he pointed to 3 crucial Senate races.
