US troop withdrawals threaten to fuel greater, potentially problematic Gulf assertiveness
As far as Gulf leaders are concerned, President Donald J. Trump demonstrated with his announced US troop withdrawals from Syria and Afghanistan that his insistence that the “world is a dangerous place” has never been truer. The troop withdrawals coupled with Mr. Trump’s praising of Saudi Arabia’s alleged willingness to foot the reconstruction bill in Syria, moves that emphasized his[Read More...]

Prescient Eduardo!
I noticed the other day — a Eduardo Galleano’s book got me started — that not only did Che, Sandino and Zapata each die before they reached their 40th birthday, Malcolm X and MLK were both assassinated at the age of 39; Malcolm and Sandino both bought the farm on February 21st, believe it or not. The powers that be[Read More...]

Cooking Books and Limiting Responsibility: The Goldman Sachs Playbook
Managing a bank will always be a more lucrative criminal enterprise than raiding one but this Brechtian styled analysis only goes so far. A closer look at the extraordinary nature of Goldman Sachs and its operations reveals not merely a bank but a flesh-eating cult of considerable proportion, brazen in its operations and indifferent to authorities. While states have been[Read More...]

Why Does the Pentagon ████ing Hate Swearing in Movies?
One of the Pentagon's consistent bugbears when it comes to movie scripts is swearing. Whether it is from the mouths of military or civilian characters, the DOD doesn't like those ████ing cuss words. But why not? Given their various political and PR concerns why is bad language such a problem? Compared to executing prisoners of war or digging gold teeth out of the mouths of dead soldiers, a quick ████ or ██████████ seems trivial.

Lessons from the Egypian monuments and the Nile for our rulers
During a recent visit to the ancient Karnak temple complex in Egypt, I overheard a lady saying Mr Trump should be here. She was suggesting that looking at these gigantic monuments, the U.S. president would realise how small he really is and that the ancient ruins should teach him a lesson. It turned out that the lady was a Parsi.[Read More...]

WADA could not stop Russian swimmers from winning six gold medals at the 2018 FINA World Championships in China
Sports should not be politicized, yet global sports have increasingly become an arena of global politics. In spite of the “Russian doping scandal”, instigated by WADA to block Russian athletes from participating in international competitions, Russian sports teams were very successful in 2018, winning 146 gold medals. To name just a few, the Russian swimmers won six gold medals at the FINA World Swimming Championships, which took place in the Chinese city of Hangzhou from December 11 to 16, 2018. Meanwhile, WADA experts visited Moscow twice to inspect Russia’s former anti-doping laboratory.

Troops Out of Syria and Afghanistan? That"s a Good Start!
We should pay attention to Washington’s wild reaction to Trump’s announcement. The vested interests do not want us to have any kind of “peace dividend” because they have become so rich on the “war dividend.” Meanwhile the middle class is getting poorer and we’re all less safe.

Bring the Troops Home, But Also Stop the Bombing
As our nation debates the merits of President Donald Trump’s call for withdrawing U.S. troops from Syria and Afghanistan, absent from the debate is the more pernicious aspect of US military involvement overseas: its air wars. Trump’s announcement and General James Mattis’ resignation should unleash a national discussion about US involvement in overseas conflicts, but … Continue reading "Bring the Troops Home, But Also Stop the Bombing"

In Election Cycles, Exposing Lies Matters... Or Does It?
A couple of nights ago, Rachel Maddow opened her show with a history lesson-- how Watergate Republicans in Congress slit their own throats by defending Nixon's cascade of lies. She starts with a little-known Indiana Republican congressman, David Dennis, elected in 1968 in what is now deep red IN-06 (represented today by Luke Messer, about to be replaced by Mike Pence's brother Greg who won the seat last month, 63.8% to 32.9%).
