How Will Women Fare as Cities Grow Dramatically? The Data Are Missing
In 2018, 55 percent of the world’s population lived in urban settings, and a UN report projects that by 2030, Delhi will overtake Tokyo as the largest city. In the New York-Newark metro area, above, the population of 18.8 million in 2018 is projected to hit 19.9 million by 2030. Paradoxically, areas of intense population growth may present more opportunities for women but not necessarily for their security. JOHN PENNEY

What If Bernie Doesn't Run? Are There Other Good Candidates Who Could Beat Trump And Govern America Progressively?
Short answer: absolutely. If you've visited the DWT ActBlue page this year, you've probably noticed that we're still raising money for Bernie-- as well as for a small handful of other non-presidential 2020 candidates. I know a lot of people in Bernie-world. When I talk with them I ask if he's running.

Northerntruthseeker Rant For Sunday, January 13th, 2019
Sunday... And better late than never, here comes my usual rant..I had to take yesterday "off" from writing here to take care of some personal and family issues... I also spent part of the day visiting my mother who does seem a lot better these days and will probably stick around for a few years yet....I am still in recovery for my severe neck and shoulder pains, and I do want to thank some of the commentators for their support and giving me a long list of different treatments for this nagging pain...

Toward Geopolitical Disengagement: Uncertain yet Desirable
[Prefatory Note: The post below was published in Middle East Eye on 30 December 2018, and is here reproduced with some modification. Humility in assessment is necessary as what we see tends to be partial and incomplete. Radical uncertainty is the appropriate interpretative outlook, which means that the future could break either bad or good. For a region that has endured so much suffering and abuse, I offer fervent wishes that we will be surprised by hopeful developments during coming months.

The Propaganda Model, Suicide, Ketamine, NYT Op-Eds, and Me
At the time, toward the end of 2018, it didn’t seem completely irrational to submit an op-ed to the New York Times. I had felt compelled to respond to a lengthy NYT op-ed “Can We Stop Suicides?” authored by Moises Velasquez-Manoff, who had offered what I considered to be a fairly insane solution: “an old anesthetic called ketamine that, at low doses, can halt suicidal thoughts almost immediately.”

Dances of Disinformation: The Partisan Politics of the Integrity Initiative
Is there such a plane of blissful, balanced information, deliberated and debated upon? No. Governments mangle; corporations distort. Interest groups tinker. A Record Number of Americans No Longer Want to Live in the US
Anyone still calling America “the land of the free” is delusional at best. Things continue to go from bad to worse in the United States, and people are feeling it. So much so, that a record number of Americans no longer want to live in the United States at all.
