It’s Peak Reading Season: too hot to go outside, too lethargic to do much inside, no holidays coming up for a while. Polls and anecdotes are probably telling you that reading is on the decline – people just don’t read like they used to! – but it turns out that reading is still popular. And that would've been terrible news a century ago, and in the century before that, and all the way back to the ancient Greeks.
Libraries are ideal examples of local, self-directed learning hubs that support all members of a community in learning naturally, without coercion. Unfortunately, even well-intentioned library-sponsored summer reading programs have the unintended effect of turning kids off of reading.

Even if one doesn’t like industrialization and its consequences, one cannot escape the reality that what preceded modernity was materially, intellectually, and culturally close to zero for nearly everyone. Something is surely amiss when modern critics, enjoying all the material comforts and conveniences as well as the cultural amenities available at the push of a button, venture to dismiss modernity as if it were something even one in a thousand of them would give up.
