Republicans have been having a rough time in California ever since the party decided it would be smart policy to demonize Hispanic voters, in the same way Trump does today. 1994's explicitly anti-immigrant Proposition 187 destroyed the GOP as a viable party with Hispanics and to some extent with Asians.

California was once the richest state in the US, but now 20% of Californians live in poverty! California's decline is due to low-skilled immigration overwhelming the state. About one-quarter of the state's population is foreign-born.

Is this why the GOP lost?The Republicans were shocked when the final vote count in CA-21, dealt them a 7th lost seat. No one really expected TJ Cox to beat David Valadao. The final forecast from FiveThirtyEight gave Valadao a 79% chance at reelection. The last public poll showed Valadao beating Cox 50-39%.

California made a big difference to the new Democratic majority in the House. With the final reversal in the Central Valley’s 21st district yesterday, a total of 7 Republican incumbents are being replaced by Democrats:
