After much speculation over the last few months about a genuine fissure in the White House between seemingly opposing pro-war and moderate camps, US President Donald Trump has finally confirmed what many had already suspected.
In a recent sit-down interview with Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump let on that he was “being pushed into military action against Iran” by his hawkish Neocon advisers.
“I have two groups of people. I have doves and I have hawks,” said Trump. “John Bolton is absolutely a hawk. If it was up to him he’d take on the whole world at one time, okay?”

This past week saw Trump pull back from the brink of retaliation against Iran for the downing of a US Global Hawk drone near the Straits of Hormuz. Certainly, the hawks in Washington were not happy about this, but for Trump’s antiwar support base, this latest development will be seen as a positive and very much in the vein of his 2016 campaign platform. As the US 2020 US Election cycle gets under way, initiating a major war in the Middle East could damage Trump’s re-election prospects, and propel a Democratic candidate into the White House. Is this a risk which Trump and the Republican party are willing to take?
