Georgian President to Visit Brussels
Tbilisi: Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili will head to Brussels on May 10 for a working visit to meet President of the European Council Donald Tusk and other officials.
During the visit Margvelashvili will also meet EU commissioner for neighborhood policy and enlargement negotiations Johannes Hahn and European Parliament members, according to the Georgian president’s office.
The visit will come ahead of the EU Eastern Partnership summit in Riga, scheduled for May 21-22.
In a joint letter with PM Irakli Garibashvili and parliament speaker Davit Usupashvili, President Margvelashvili has urged the EU to make an “unambiguous endorsement of visa-free regime” with Georgia at the Eastern Partnership summit in Riga on May 21-22. The Georgian leaders also expressed hope that the country’s “European perspective” will also be acknowledged at the Riga Summit.
“Upcoming Riga Summit and our expectations will of course be high on agenda of meetings in Brussels,” Georgian President’s foreign policy adviser, Tengiz Pkhaladze, told journalists in Tbilisi on May 8. “We will also discuss situation in Georgia and in the region, including issues related to security.”
In Brussels Margvelashvili also plans a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and King Philippe of Belgium, according to the Georgian president’s office.
