Poroshenko reaffirms Kyiv’s course towards NATO membership
Ukraine’s national security and defense strategy, a draft of which is being considered by the National Security and Defense Council on Wednesday, must provide for the country’s future membership in NATO, says President Petro Poroshenko.
“Our strategy must provide for the possibility of Ukraine acquiring a NATO membership in the future. We must finally put this extremely important element back into this document,” the head of state told the Security Council, the president’s press office said.
This is being done in order to obtain assurances of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the president said. “Cooperation with NATO, as well as our commitment to the European Union’s common security and defense policy pass like a red thread through this whole document,” Poroshenko said.
The draft strategy should provide for compatibility between Ukraine’s security and defense sector with those of the NATO countries, he said.
“The president recalled that at its Security Council meeting Russia made substantial changes to its strategy, trying to use its experience of the war and aggression,” the president said, according to his press office.
