NATO says it respects Poroshenko’s signing law on abandoning non-aligned status
NATO respects Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s decision to sign a law on Ukraine’s abandoning its non-aligned status, NATO officials said on Tuesday.
“Ukraine is an independent and sovereign state, and it can decide the direction of its own foreign policy,” NATO officials said, commenting on the signing of the law by Poroshenko during a press conference on Monday, UNIAN’s Brussels correspondent has reported.
“If Ukraine decides to apply for membership of the North Atlantic Alliance, NATO will assess its readiness to join the alliance in the same way as it does with other candidates,” NATO headquarters said.
As UNIAN reported earlier, on December 29, during the press conference in the presence of media representatives Poroshenko signed the Law “On Amendments to certain legislative acts of Ukraine on abandoning the non-aligned status of the country.”
“I am signing this law, and you’re participating in this,” he said.
As reported earlier, on December 23, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the law on abandoning the non-aligned status of Ukraine. The decision was supported by 303 deputies.
