Tbilisi: Georgian armed forces are prepared for defense in case of escalation of the situation, Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania said to Imedi TV Sept.3, commenting on the statement by the Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, Mikhail Popov’s intention to make changes in military doctrine due to the emergence of new threats by NATO and Ukraine.
“Russia has repeatedly revised its military doctrine, especially in 2008,” the minister stressed.
He noted that all these years after the war in 2008, Georgia did not lose time in vain and studied the mistakes made in the course of hostilities.
“In addition, the upcoming NATO summit will contribute to the strengthening of the defense of our country. Georgian armed forces are on constant alert and always ready to repel the enemy’s attack,” Alasaniya stressed.
At the same time, he noted that all the issues and problems should be solved by peaceful means, through negotiations.
On the night of August 8, 2008, military actions were launched on the territory of South Ossetia, Georgia. Later the Russian troops occupied the city and drove back the Georgian military. In late August, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced two unrecognized republics as occupied territories.
