A Blank Check for War
Why did the President do an about face and suddenly decide to let Congress vote on intervening in Syria? It was the polls that did it: only nine percent of the American people support a bombing campaign. The number goes up somewhat if it is proved the Syrian government is responsible for the poison gas […]

Who says he can’t?
Here’s what former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had to say about using force against another country — one considered far more offensive than Syria — when she was a U.S. Senator:
“If the administration believes that any, any, use of force against Iran is necessary, the president must come to congress to seek that authority.” –Sen. Hillary Clinton, Feb 14, 2007
Again referring to Iran, Vice President Joe Biden, agrees. And then some – - -

Willful Ignorance-- A Problem For Representative Democracy?
On Wednesday, Ken pointed out that more Louisiana Republicans blame Obama for the poor response to Hurricane Katrina than blame George W. Bush, 29-28%-- with another 44% "unsure." Perhaps most Louisiana Republicans didn't recall that they had never heard of Barack Obama in 2005 when Katrina struck. At the time he had been a U.S. senator for a few months. "Oh my God," I thought when I heard about this; "are these people voting?

Commentary: Congressional approval no license for attacking Syria
By Lu Yu
BEIJING: U.S. President Barack Obama’s last-minute decision to put a planned military attack on Syria on hold displays some sort of prudence, but it does not end the worry for a war-weary American public and the world’s peace-loving nations. -
Obama Will Launch a Huge Propaganda Blitz – and May Attack Syria Even If He Loses the Vote in Congress
Grassroots pressure has forced President Obama to seek approval from Congress for an attack on Syria. But Obama is hell-bent on ordering a missile assault on that country, and he has two very important aces in the hole.
The administration is about to launch a ferocious propaganda blitz that will engulf a wide range of U.S. media. And as a fallback, the president is reserving the option of attacking Syria no matter what Congress does. -

"Geniuses perceive the world in a different way, and as a result have trouble interacting with other people" (Ian Welsh)
"Perhaps the storyteller," suggests The New Yorker's James Woods, "is especially ill suited for happy family life." Foremost among his subjects is Saul Bellow (above). "True genius, and I've known a few, is alienating. Geniuses perceive the world in a different way than other people do, and as a result they have trouble interacting with other people. . . . In the old days, geniuses were tolerated, even coddled. . . .

US Secretary of State John Kerry accuses Syrian government forces of killing 1,429 people, including 426 children, in a chemical weapons attack in Damascus last week described as an “inconceivable horror” and “a crime against conscience”.

Response to a friend on Obama’s speech
Once again, let me play devil’s advocate.
Aside from the obvious fact that no head of state, with or without the approval of his nation’s legislative branch, can inform the world that he intends to military attack another nation that threatens neither his own or any other country (despite Obama’s repeated and thoroughly dishonest invocations of “national security”) constituting a gross insult to the international order, look what in effect he has done: -
