With all eyes on the upcoming Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, the weekend summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization regional security bloc has gone largely under-reported by the western mainstream media.
When SCO summit gets under way in the Chinese port city of Qingdao on Saturday, the leaders from the eight-member bloc are expected to take on some very pressing geo-political issues, from the tensions on the Korean peninsula, to the Iran nuclear deal and a looming US driven trade war.

Next week’s BRICS meeting is set to discuss options for creating new customs cooperation initiatives which could pave the way for integration between the BRICS, the Eurasian Economic Union and the overarching goals of One Belt–One Road.
Russia which is a core member of both organisations currently operates a customs union within the single market of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), a bloc which includes Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Russia. Indonesia has recently been in talks to either join the EAEU or develop a customs deal with the bloc.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry and Indian Ministry of External Affairs have both confirmed that Indian troops have been withdrawn from Doklam/Donglang, an area which China claims as its sovereign territory while India maintains it is part of its effective protectorate of Bhutan.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying has held a press conference where she discussed recent events while taking questions from journalists. The overall weight of her remarks speak to the fact that China is getting increasingly fed up with India’s failure to engage in dialogue with China over the Doklam/Donglang border dispute as well as other areas of the China-India frontier whose demarcations are not universally recognised.
China is becoming increasingly emboldened in its expressions of anger towards any country which violates its sovereignty.
On the 2nd of July, shortly before this year’s G20 conference in Hamburg, China scrambled vessels and fighter jets when the USS Stethem breached maritime waters claimed by Bejing in the South China Sea. This came shortly after the US sold high-grade weapons to Chinese Taipei, also known as Taiwan, whose regime China considers an illegal entity operating on Chinese soil.
