To reverse the effects of civilization would destroy the dreams of a lot of people. There’s no way around it. We can talk all we want about sustainability, but there’s a sense in which it doesn’t matter that these people’s dreams are based on, embedded in, intertwined with, and formed by an inherently destructive economic and social system. Their dreams are still their dreams. What right do I — or does anyone else — have to destroy them.
At the same time, what right do they have to destroy the world?

The 2018 film by Alex Garland bears remarkable similarity to his previous film Sunshine from a decade ago, where a team of scientists attempts to re-ignite the sun. Here, a team of scientists and specialists investigates a mysterious “shimmer” that has appeared near a state park where previous teams have disappeared. The film has generated much speculation, with comparisons to Kubrick: I will take you deep into the film’s symbolism and mythological context.


Jay and Tristan return to cover the announcement that 2019 is the year of the vegan diet in the Economist, the Guardian and many other publications. We discuss previous debates with Vegan Gains, atheism and relativism and the impact on millennials. As promised, we come to Programmed to Kill, an earlier, and equally important book from Dave McGowan, of Weird Scenes Inside Laurel Canyon fame.  I summarize his thesis and in the full talk give my analysis and commentary based on the numerous other analyses I’ve read regarding related material.  We look at the strengths and weaknesses of his book, as well as the crucial connection to Hollywood, which created a whole new entertainment genre surrounding ‘lone gunner sickos’….or are they really lone gunners?

I’ve noticed an interesting phenomenon in recent years when talking to many Americans. One thing which has become increasingly prevalent is how they will reference a plot or character from a Hollywood production when describing a real-life situation.


Maniac is the new Netflix series starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. The series is a quirky fantasy comedy set in a near-future dystopia. However, the series is about more than it lets on, as we have conscious references to MK ULTRA, gnosticism, illuminism, and other bizarre topics.
