Child Slaves Receive Favorable Supreme Court Ruling Against Nestle, Others

This week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on a lawsuit filed by former child slaves who once worked for Nestle. The court’s decision finalizes a lower court’s prior ruling, which Nestle previously attempted to overturn in an attempt to halt legal ramifications from individuals who worked in the African cocoa trade as children. In other words, Nestle failed in crushing a lawsuit that will hold the company liable for using child slave workers.

Six major food manufacturers – including Nestle, PepsiCo, and Mexican baking company Grupo Bimbo – have been slapped with fines by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice, which alleges the companies failed to include labels indicating the use of genetically modified ingredients.
The fines range from $277,400 to just over $1 million, for an estimated total of $3 million.

Nestle can No Longer Claim Nesquik is “a Great Start to the Day” in the U.K.

The United Kingdom isn’t messin’ around when it comes to false advertising and food company claims. Earlier this month, the iconic Nesquik bunny took a kick to the cottontail when the U.K.’s Advertising Standards Agency forced Nestle, the product’s maker, to remove its claim that the beverage is “a great start to the day.”
The agency upheld a claim by the Children’s Food Campaign that claimed the tagline encouraged poor nutritional habits in children.

‘Cubosomes’ in Coffee Could Offer All-Day Energy in Just 1 Cup

Nestle claims to have created a way for people to get an all-day caffeine boost from a single cup of coffee.
Scientists at the Nestlé Research Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland, together with École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and university ETH Zurich say they’ve found a technique which allows one little cup of coffee to release nutrients in a slow and sustained way.
The technique, which revolves around “cubosomes,” could potentially be used in a variety of other products, as well.
