In recent days, millions of viewers across the country have been subjected not only to a statement concerning “fake news” eerily repeated verbatim by dozens of local television stations across the country, but also to reports uncovering the fact that those stations had been instructed to recite this statement.
If you spent any time on social media over the weekend, you’ve probably seen it by now. On Saturday, Deadspin’s Timothy Burke published a supercut of news anchors for the Sinclair Broadcasting Group reciting a distinctly Trumpian promo. “We’re concerned about the troubling trend of irresponsible, one-sided news stories plaguing our country,” each of them intoned. “The sharing of biased and false news has become all too common on social media.
Journalists and corporate watchdogs reacted with alarm when it was reported last month that the right-wing media giant Sinclair Broadcast Group was planning to force local news anchors to read from a script denouncing “fake” and “false” news stories in a distinctly Trumpian fashion.
