The Pendulum Swings Again: the Desecration of Hagia Sophia

The Turkish President should have consulted the prophecies of St. Paisius of the Holy Mountain rather than whatever kitaps he was reading before embarking on his risky provocation. In plain Greek, several decades ago St. Paisius was educating Turkish leaders about the sequence of events that the reconversion of Hagia Sophia would set in motion: “When the cathedral of Hagia Sophia is turned into a mosque, Turkey will disintegrate”.

The Orthodox View of Scripture

Apologist Sam Shamoun, the Assyrian Encyclopedia, invited me on to discuss the Orthodox view of Tradition and Scripture, why we don’t accept sola scriptura, and how this contrasts with the other guests Sam had on. Dr. Robert Sunegnis presented a 2 hour talk that failed to really even address the actual issues, and Anthony Rogers presented the Calvinist view. In my talk I respond to both views, and stress the importance of this question.

As White Jesus Debate Rages, Islam Undergoes its Own Racial Reckoning

While the vigorous and often bitter debate around depictions of “White Jesus” continues to rage, a similar, but quieter discussion is taking place within Islamic communities on the subject of overly white illustrations of key figures in the Muslim tradition, particularly the twelve imams so revered in Shiaism, an subsect of Islam that comprises approximately ten percent of the world’s Muslim population.

Dr. Shabir Ally can be found here, and Kyosan and the Calliopean discord can be found here: discord.gg/Calliopeanclub

An Arrested Middle East – The ‘New Strategy for Securing the Realm’ Dissipates

Some eight years ago, I wrote about the outbreak of popular stirring in the Middle East, then labelled the ‘Arab Awakening’. Multiple popular discontents were welling: demands for radical change proliferated, but above all, there was anger – anger at mountainous inequalities in wealth; blatant injustices and political marginalisation; and at a corrupt and rapacious élite. The moment had seemed potent, but no change resulted. Why?

Justice is Indivisible: Placing Palestine Back at the Center of American Muslim Activism

It was nearly twenty years ago at a Muslim conference in Washington D.C. that I heard the distressing argument that Palestine should not be made a central topic in the American Muslim political agenda.
The point, which took many by surprise, was enunciated by a young American Pakistani Muslim academic, whose name is not important for my purpose here.

Jesus in Islam & the Bible: An Exchange – Jay Dyer / Nazam Goffoor

An impromptu discussion and exchange on the Person of Christ in the texts of the law of Moses, the prophets, the writings and the New Testament.  Nazam is an apologist who focuses on exegesis of the Koran and its relationship with other religions like Christianity and the Jewish law.  We will examine these issues. His channel is here.
