When the House took up impeachment charges against President Clinton in the 1998 lame duck session right after the midterms-- in which the Democrats had an unlikely (and, for the GOP, ominous) net pickup of 5 seats-- a whole slew of right-wing Republicans were exposed for their own infidelities and hypocrisy, particularly Speaker Gingrich (R-GA), Speaker-designate Bob Livingstone (R-LA), Henry Hyde (R-IL), domestic terrorism supporter Helen Chenoweth (R-ID) and deranged soc

As left and right partisans fold Chicken Little into the Boy Who Cried Wolf, high time to label our latest national derangement: Impeachment Addiction Affliction. One day militant Tea Partiers sound the alarm, capping off laughable threats to “sue the White House” with the primal scream, “impeach the anti-American devil president.” Next day contrite House leadership demurs, “No, no, not on the agenda,” sweeping “off the table” a true nuclear option.

I'm not sure when Rick Perlstein started writing his new book, The Invisible Bridge-- The Fall Of Reagan And The Rise Of Reagan, but I'll guess it was at least a year or two before Boehner came up with his lame-brained idea to sue President Obama. In it, though, is a pretty powerful reminder of just what an imperial presidency was, replete with the kind of overstepping of boundaries of which Boehner is accusing Obama.

We've been trying-- unsuccessfully-- to get the DSCC to understand that they will hold or lose the Senate based on South Dakota, so maybe they should help the Democratic candidate for the open seat there. They don't listen to me. But maybe they'll listen to Washington Post Fix crew-- Chris Cillizza, Aaron Blake and Sean Sullivan.
