By Noel Brinkerhoff and Danny Biederman | AllGov | September 8, 2015 Native Americans are upset at Pope Francis for his decision to canonize 18th-century Franciscan missionary Junipero Serra. Serra founded the mission system in California, which helped establish the Catholic Church long before California ever became a state. But the missions treated local Native […]
By Dick Atlee, Ken Freeland, and Cheryl Curtiss | Truth and Shadows | September 18, 2015 For years the 9/11 Truth movement has been vainly pleading with mainstream media – and the “alternative” 9/11-Truth-rejecting media (which we’ll include for our purposes as mainstream) to cover any of the endless, obvious problems with any of the Official […]
Sputnik – 19.09.2015 The US government for the first time will officially use the term “sexual rights” in international negotiations on human rights and global development, according to media reports. One of the uglier moments of Wednesday night's GOP debate-- chock full'o'ugly moments-- was when rabid climate-change denier Marco Rubio decided to make his presence known by making a tasteless joke about California's devastating drought. It took about three hours before the CNN moderators brought up climate change as a topic of discussion-- which must've lasted for less than five minutes-- and, predictably, Rubio was the first to jump in... to denigrate it entirely.

Nairobi activists held banners shunning the introduction of GM food into their country along Kenyatta Avenue this week to send a message to Deputy President William Russo. In Kenya, the president has lifted a ban to allow genetically modified foods to be grown in the nation “to increase food security,” and citizens aren’t happy.

You know those microbeads that are found in toothpaste, facewash, hand soap and a bunch of other things? They’re terrible for the environment, and you should stop using them.
Microbeads are added to products to increase scrubbing action. The tiny plastic balls are taking over our oceans, harming the creatures living in them. About 8 billion microbeads make their way into U.S. waterways each day – enough to cover 300 tennis courts. [1]
Professional football players take some violent tackles. Their helmets are intended to protect them from immediate damage, but every hit rattles the brain inside the skull. Over time, trauma to the brain can add up to debilitating injury and disease. A new study on traumatic brain injury reveals the problem may be more widespread than health experts and players ever imagined.

Abu Omar al-Shishani, the red-bearded face of ISIS terror lately described in such headlines as ‘Star pupil’: Pied piper of ISIS recruits was trained by U.S. for the fact that he received American military training as part of an elite Georgian army unit in 2006 and after, did not stop playing for “team America” once […]
I was in college in the mid and late 1960s. College for me was mostly about getting high-- on drugs, liberation politics and music. As chairman of Stony Brook's Student Activities Board, I got to do all three. I invited Timothy Leary to come give a lecture, and he gave me some very pure LSD when I picked him up at the airport. I used it for my first acid trip. Recently I wrote about the experience of having Julian Bond and Strom Thurmond come out to the school as part of the same lecture series. As for music...

Various people, including Donald Trump, have suggested that Obama was not born in the U.S. and may be a Muslim. The former claim, while it may be false, is not absurd—there is no obvious way of being certain of the details of the birth more than fifty years ago of someone of no particular prominence. The claim he is a Muslim, on the other hand, has at least two serious problems. One of the binding obligations of Islam is to pray five times a day, in a specified manner (with some possible variations), at specified times.

By Johannes Hautaviita | teleSUR | September 17, 2015 Western Sahara, formerly a Spanish colony, has been occupied by Morocco since 1975. Just found this old letter I had published in the ABA’s Young Lawyer division magazine, Barrister (now Young Lawyer), from 1996. I was reminded when I saw this scan of from a fellow lawyer about it (to right). Coincidentally, I met and became friends years later with Raquel “Rocky” Rodriguez through my involvement with the […]

Maybe when Trump looked at Fiorina's face and made the infamous and sexist remark, he wasn't talking about her being "ugly" per se, but about the twisted inner ugliness that was on display for the whole country during Wednesday night's CNN debate. DO LOOK AT THAT FACE-- it was twisted, contorted and misshapen in the same way Hitler's was when he was trying to manipulate large audiences.Fiorina was forcefully asserting that the blatant lies she was spouting were A Truth worth fighting for.

Last week a serious typhoon hit eastern Japan creating flooding that has not occurred for at least 50 years. Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator and owner of the triple meltdown site Fukushima Daiichi, admitted that drainage pumps at Fukushima failed and radioactive water once again poured into the Pacific. But what about the extraordinary amount of radioactive cesium, strontium, and other isotopes spread hundreds of miles from the nuclear catastrophe site yet to be cleaned up and now displaced by the flood into newly contaminated villages?

Two Fridays ago, I had the pleasure of being on the Ron Paul Liberty Report, along with Dr. Paul and Daniel McAdams, the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity Executive Director. We chatted about my Antiwar piece “Who Is Listening to Dick Cheney?”, about the lack of consequences for warmongering (or any government outrage, in fact!), and had time to sneak in a brief drug war chat at the end.

The US Appeals Court has ruled that federal regulators should never have approved an insecticide that is harmful to pollinators, like bees. In this unprecedented ruling, it was found that the EPA used flawed and limited data. This heralds a changing tide which will finally hold the biotech industry and industrial agriculture accountable for the mass die-offs of our pollinators.
