Syrian Air Force jets pounded Jihadist positions in the north central city of Al-Raqqah. Around 26 air strikes targeted positions controlled by the Islamic State, including terrorist base camps and administrative buildings including the “court”.
The city, situated on the banks of the Euphrates river, fell to an alliance of extremist groups in March, 2013. Since then, the Islamic State (formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham) has held most of the city and enforced a brutal regime resulting in public executions, crucifixions and other crimes against the city’s population.
Syrian forces have intensified strikes on the Islamic State, following the overrunning of government positions outside the city, resulting in a mass-beheading of Syrian soldiers whose heads were put on display in the city centre.
Over two dozen air strikes were carried out on terrorist positions around the city and on groups of foreign fighters around Taqba military airbase to the south west of the city. The airbase has been reinforced with Syrian troops recently.
Syrian combat jets have intensified targeting of Islamic State militants across northern Syria and across the border in Iraq, where the group is gaining ground and increasing it’s targeting and mass killing of civilians.
