Parliament Plans Resolution on Ukraine
Tbilisi: Georgian Parliament is expected to discuss at a session later on September 3 a draft resolution on Ukraine, condemning Russia’s “aggression” and reiterating support towards territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.
The text, drafted by the Georgian Dream parliamentary majority group, says that…”Russia…carries out blatant military aggression against neighboring, sovereign state.”
The draft says that like in case of Georgia since August 2008 war, in Ukraine too Russia violates international law. The draft resolution also expresses “full support” towards Georgian government’s position expressed over crisis in Ukraine, as well as towards the Georgian authorities’ efforts to provide assistance to Ukraine.
It also calls on the international community “to use all the resources at its disposal” to help bring “military hostilities and aggression” in Ukraine to an end and urges NATO and the EU to “accelerate” Euro-Atlantic integration of Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
Since December, 2013 the Georgian Parliament has adopted two statements and one resolution on Ukraine.
When the Parliament passed resolution on Ukraine in March, 2014, UNM parliamentary minority group refused to vote for it citing GD majority’s refusal to include in the text direct calls for international sanctions against Russia. The issue may again be debated in the Parliament when it discusses the new draft resolution on Ukraine – one of the UNM lawmakers, Akaki Minashvili, said earlier on September 3 that the legislative body should call on the government to join western sanctions against Russia.
