US ABMs in the Pacific ‘threat to strategic stability’ – Moscow

Moscow fears plans by the US, Japan and South Korea to build missile defenses in the Pacific may create a situation similar to the one in Europe, where American ABMs to be deployed are likely to compromise Russia’s deterrence capability.
This means strategic stability would be at risk.
Deputy Defense Minister Anatoli Antonov spoke about this in Singapore Saturday at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue Asian security conference.
He said peace must rest on mutual confidence, not on a balance of fear.
The Americans, meanwhile, are pursuing plans to build another early-warning radar on Japanese territory. They say they need the facility to track missile activity by North Korea.
