Spain takes over Baltic air policing mission from Germany

TALLINN: The Spanish jet-fighter contingent on Friday assumed Baltic air policing mission over Estonia’s airspace Amari in a ceremony, replacing the German unit which had been stationed in Estonia for the past four months.
The four Spanish Eurofighter Typhoon jets on Monday this week landed in Amari airbase, some 60 kilometers southwest of Tallinn, for the four-month mission, the Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR) reported.
The ceremony was attended by Estonia’s Prime Minister Taavi Roivas, Minister of Defense Sven Mikser, and a number of high-ranking NATO officers.
Since September this year, the German planes have scrambled 19 times to intercept unidentified aircraft, Estonian Air Force public affairs officer Alar Laats told ERR News.
