Ukraine plans to become NATO special partner this year
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine is hoping to receive special partner status and become a key ally of NATO before the end of this year.
This goal is stated in the Cabinet of Ministers’ action plan entitled “Rebuilding the Country” in the section “Overcoming Russian Aggression,” which was posted on the Ukrainian government Web site on Wednesday.
The Ukrainian government is also hoping to receive military-technical assistance from the G7, the European Union, and NATO before the end of this year.
The plan also foresees the completion within six months of the Wall project: “the construction and development of a reliable reinforced border between Ukraine and Russia.”
The Cabinet of Ministers hopes that a government bill canceling Ukraine’s non-aligned status and resuming the course towards Euro-Atlantic integration will be adopted in September 2014.
The plan also foresees that the participating countries of the Budapest Memorandum will provide practical assistance to ensure Ukraine’s security by the end of September.

Ukraine may get non-NATO ally status by end of this year – justice minister
Ukraine may get the status of a major non-NATO ally of the United States before the end of this year, Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko has said.
“In view of the conditions in which our country is now, we have the prospect of getting the status of a U.S. ally rather quickly. I think it will happen this year,” he said at events marking Notary Day on Tuesday.
Petrenko said that a non-NATO ally status would help Ukraine expand cooperation in the defense sector, as well as get the mechanism under which it will be possible to procure the necessary weapons.
“The procedure for granting a U.S. ally status has been launched. But I personally believe that it is an intermediate stage for granting Ukraine full membership of the North Atlantic Alliance,” he said.
