Meryl Streep Roasts Trump At Golden Globes, President-Elect Hits Back On Twitter

(REPORT) — During Sunday’s Golden Globes, actress Meryl Streep was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. After taking the stage to graciously receive the award, she utilized her platform to address something of worth: the Presidential election.
Rather than use her allotted minutes to speak about her career, she discussed the present political client – never once mentioning Donald Trump by name. She did, however, allude to some of his previous offensive acts, draw attention to the fact that Hollywood is comprised of migrants from around the globe, and speak out on behalf of press freedoms.
“There was one performance this year that stunned me,” she said. “It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective, and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth.
“It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.”
In case you missed it, Streep was referring to the incident in which Trump appeared to mock New York Times reporter Serge F. Kovaleski, who has arthrogryposis, an affliction that limits the functioning of his joints.
She continued:
“And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.”
Donald Trump soon after responded that Streep is a “Hillary lover” and that he was “not surprised” to be attacked by “liberal movie people.” Monday morning, the President-elect took to Twitter to express his frustration, stating that Streep’s speech was an attack on him. Trump referred to her as “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood” and “a Hillary flunky who lost big.”

It’s worth noting that Meryl Streep has been nominated for 30 Golden Globe awards and 19 Academy Awards (more than any other actor for either honor) in her four-decades-long career, as The Washington Post notes.
