The Folly of Pompeo"s Anti-Iran "Coalition"
It isn’t realistic to burn bridges with major allies and then turn around and ask them for help. If the U.S. had wanted our allies’ assistance on other matters, it should have paid attention to their concerns and preferences before reneging on the deal. Making requests so soon after spitting in their faces isn’t just incompetent diplomacy, but practically invites reprisals. Pompeo should be working on repairing the damage that reneging on the deal has caused to relations with several of our major allies.

How Democracy Ended
If the situation is hopeless, everyone should at least have the opportunity to understand it. Because, if the aristocracy are the only people who understand it, there can’t be any hope for democracy, at all.

Japan promises retaliatory measures against Trump’s tariffs
Machiavelli once said “a man will sooner forget the death of his father than the loss of his patron”. Trump is doing exactly that to the whole world, one country at a time, while citing his ‘America first’ philosophy. He’s not waging hot wars on them, he’s hitting them right where it hurts most – the pocket book.

Dutch companies set to expand business with Iran, in spite of US sanctions
In cooperation with the European move to preserve the JCPOA Iran nuclear deal, companies in the Netherlands are committing to preserving their participation in the Iranian market, and expanding them in the long term. Apparently, we have a situation here where America’s threats are dogs that just won’t hunt, as they don’t particularly scare everybody into compliance. As some other companies have feared a US reprisal in the event that they get busted trading with Iran, some Dutch companies are pressing forward.

Putin: Skripals would not have survived ‘military grade’ nerve agent
Upon learning of Sergei Skripal’s discharge from the hospital, Putin was happy to hear of his recovery. Although, he reiterated that he was doubtful that their malady was caused by poisoning of a military grade nerve agent. About a month ago, Yulia Skripal had recovered and was released from hospital care, meaning that both of the victims are presently doing well.

Shutting Down The Government Is Now A Game Of Chicken For Trumpanzee
A friend of mine used to be in business with one of Trump's lawyers. He told my friend and my friend told me a funny story. Lawyers hate working for Trump and not only because he doesn't pay his bill. This particular lawyer told him that among lawyers who have worked for Trump this is fairly common. He and Trump would be their way to court.

Germany will ‘fight’ for its interests in face of Trump’s ‘America First’ policy, says Economic Minister
It’s no secret that Germany has many deep ties with America that seem to be completely unbreachable. But in the face of Trump’s ‘America first’ policy, those ties are feeling some strain. America first, by definition, means that America’s interests, across all sectors, get the top priority above those of all others, and even in spite of them, with heavy emphasis on the ‘spite’ part.

Europe: National Sovereignty versus International Conquest, at Stake over Iran
Europe now faces its ultimate ideological fork-in-the-road, which it has thus far ignored but can no longer ignore: They need to decide whether they seek a world of nations that each is sovereign over its own territory but over no other (and this would not be a world at war); or whether they seek instead a world in which[Read More...]

Is The Road To A Senate Majority Thru Tennessee? Bredesen Is Much Better Than Kyrsten Sinema
Tennessee (R+14 PVI, worse than Texas, South Carolina, Kansas or Alaska) was a very Trumpy state in 2016. Trump beat Hillary 1,522,925 (60.7%) to 870,695 (34.7%) and won every one of Tennessee's 95 counties except Shelby (Memphis), Davidson (Nashville) and tiny Haywood, a black-majority rural agricultural county north of Memphis. So its hardly a state you'd think the Democrats would be targeting for a big Senate race. But they are.

Why More Regulations Won’t Fix the Financial Sector's Problems
A strong financial sector is still necessary for economic growth. Buttonwood is right when he claims that financial markets are not free, which has turned the financial industry into a source of systemic risk. Yet this should justify a true liberalization of the sector, and not more regulations that feed the monster and make it grow bigger.

The Intellectual Inconsistency of Championing Diversity While Condemning "Cultural Appropriation"
I had a moment of clarity last weekend and realized something. The very same folks that love and laud the benefits of “diversity” (while never really explaining or proving what those benefits are) are the same ones who will hector you to death for engaging in what they call “cultural appropriation.” How can this not be seen as the most fundamental contradiction and blatant intellectual inconsistency?
