WASHINGTON (Opinion) — Meryl Streep received her 21st Oscar nomination last week for her portrayal of Katharine Graham in Steven Spielberg’s thriller, The Post. The film depicts the iconic newspaper publisher and her storied editor, Ben Bradlee (played by Tom Hanks), staring down a ruthless Nixon administration and cautious shareholders to print the secret government study that put paid to the official lies undergirding the Vietnam War, in an act of heroism that saved the Fourth Estate if not American democracy itself.
Talk about fake news.

U.S. President Donald J. Trump announced his own “Fake News Awards” for 2017 on Wednesday via the Republican National Committee’s website, gop.com, and received the expected lukewarm reception from mainstream media outlets.

US President Trump created a DC media firestorm on Thursday, when he reportedly questioned the policy of the United States regarding bring people in from war-torn and very poor Third World nations, with very strong, and profane language.
“Why are we having all these people from s***hole countries come here?” the president reportedly barked during an Oval Office sitdown meeting that was attended by several members of Congress. Two people, unnamed, but claiming familiarity with the matter, reported this to the Washington Post.

But no matter what environmentalists do, our best efforts are insufficient. We’re losing badly, on every front. Those in power are hell-bent on destroying the planet, and most people don’t care. Frankly, I don’t have much hope. But I think that’s a good thing. Hope is what keeps us chained to the system, the conglomerate of people and ideas and ideals that is causing the destruction of the Earth.
