As various terrorist forces in Syria, including notorious al-Qaeda factions face total collapse, pockets of ISIS in Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor remain the biggest obstacle to the full liberation of Syrian territory.
In many cases foreign fighters and some Syrians who fought with terrorist groups have fled the country with Libya being a prime destination. Others have agreed to participate in government amnesty programs and have consequently laid down their arms. Others yet have atoned for their terrorist activities and pledged their loyal to government led anti-terrorist forces.
Less than 24 hours after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that the US has no authorisation to attack Syrian forces, the Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed that the US has moved its HIMARS long-range rocket launchers from Jordan to inside the Syrian border near the US garrison in At Tanf where over the last two months the US has launched repeated attacks against convoys of the Syrian Arab Army and its allies.
Russia said it will be monitoring the situation closely.
Syria’s Ambassador to the United Nations and lead envoy in the Geneva and Astana peace talks, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari has issued Syria’s official response to yesterday’s US bombing of Syrian and allied forces near At Tanf.
Dr. al-Jaafari stated,
“The important thing is that our political ambition is higher because we want to focus on fighting terrorism represented by armed groups and the state and government terrorism happening against our country. This includes the American aggression, French aggression and British aggression”.
The United States Air Force has struck a contingent of the Syrian Arab Army and allied fighters near At Tanf in southern Syria. The US has a military outpost in At Tanf which is close to both the Iraqi and Jordanian border.
This is the second time that the US has bombed elements of the Syrian Arab Army since Donald Trump became President.
