Yesterday the State Department announced the beginnings of yet more sanctions on Iran, this time targeting the country’s financial industry. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed the move was necessary to “further deprive the Islamic Republic of Iran of funds to carry out its support for terrorist activities and nuclear extortion that threatens the world,” adding that his actions were part of a “maximum economic pressure campaign” that will continue until Iran ceases its “malign behavior.”

America is becoming exceptionally exceptional. In some votes at the UN General Assembly — the Assembly of nations — only Israel, or one or two other U.S. allies, vote along with it, and all others either vote against it, or else abstain in order to prevent U.S. retaliation against their own nation. No other nation is anything like that. In fact, on many occasions, the U.S. arm-twists other delegations in order to get them to abstain from voting so as to make less stark, and less embarrassing, America’s international isolation.

The Trump administration is seeking international support to turn back the clock on sanctions against Iran erasing the negotiations made during the Obama administration. So far the “international community” does not seem too thrilled by the idea, especially certain members of the UN Security Council who themselves have been sanctioned by Washington in the past.

Nicosia did not decide to veto an EU decision to impose sanctions against Belarus unless the bloc also took action against Turkey, Foreign Minister Nicos Christodoulides said on Wednesday.
Cyprus did, however, insist that the agreement at foreign ministers’ level on the discussion of both issues be implemented, he said.
