The arrest of Ghislaine Maxwell this week has led to a media feeding frenzy and calls for Prince Andrew to talk to the FBI, including from the lead lawyer prosecuting the case, Audrey Strauss of the Southern District, New York. He should not. The answer to the question why not is two words: Michael Flynn. Or alternatively George Papadopoulos.

Maxwell has escaped to her native France and is now understood to have moved into a flat on Avenue Matignon. Her current residence in Paris is a five-minute drive from Epstein’s £7 million flat on Avenue Foch.

A major problem detectives often have when investigating serious crimes is that victims will exaggerate, embellish, or even lie outright. Of course, some victims are not really victims at all. Jussie Smollett springs at once to mind, but even genuine victims cannot always be trusted. A classic example of this happened at Bolton, Lancashire, in October 2013.  A young woman told police she had been raped; her attacker then ran off with her handbag and phone.

Linda’s encounter with Reed was November 9/10, 1996. He was arrested a few months later, and Linda identified him. He could also have been tried for attacking her, but again, the authorities seemed to think such a prosecution superfluous when his DNA matched the man who had raped Stacey. They will probably think again next time they arrest someone like Reed.

This month, two people involved in sex crimes are in the news on both sides of the Atlantic. Rodney Reed has been on death row in Texas since 1998 when he was convicted of the April 1996 murder of Stacey Stites. Although Reed was charged only with capital murder, the victim was also raped.
By contrast, Virginia Giuffre, the former Virginia Roberts, claims to have been a victim of sex crimes, in particular she says she was trafficked by the now deceased Jeffrey Epstein and forced to have sex with (raped by) Prince Andrew, who at the time was fifth in line to the English throne.
