Making Ends Meet on Gaza’s streets

One morning in late January, Nabil al-Duhadar, 45, got up before 6 for dawn prayers and then immediately set to work. Al-Duhadar is a street vendor who sells turmos – a lupin bean snack often sold in market stalls. The snack takes preparation: the beans are soaked over 24 hours before being cooked for a couple of hours and then seasoned with[Read More...]

Why BDS Movement Deserves A Nobel prize

When Norwegian lawmaker Bjørnar Moxnes nominated the Palestinian-led boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement for the Nobel Peace Prize earlier this month, he called it an effort towards “stopping an ascendent, racist and right-wing politics sweeping too much of our world.” Moxnes heads Rødt (Red) Party, one of several relatively small groups on the left of Norway’s political spectrum. The party won[Read More...]

More Than a Fight over Couscous: Why the Palestinian Narrative Must Be Embraced

As soon as Virgin Atlantic Airlines introduced a couscous-style salad “inspired by the flavours of Palestine”, a controversy ensued. Israel’s supporters ignited a social media storm and sent many complaints to the company, obliging the airline to remove the reference to Palestine. In the Zionist narrative, Palestine does not exist – nor is it allowed to exist – even if[Read More...]

The Palestinian People Are Not Fooled any More

By Rima Najjar | Palestine Chronicle | February 21, 2018 As a Palestinian, I am skeptical about Mahmoud Abbas’s address, billed by the press as “Abbas delivers rare address at UNSC meeting”, which calls for two states. Whereas I believe that the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement’s goals can be achieved through more than one […]

Finkelstein on Gaza: Who or What Has a Right to Exist?

Gaza: An Inquest into its Martyrdom (Verso, 2018),  is an extraordinary book.   It is also a difficult book to read.   In his preface, Norman Finkelstein writes that this work “has been a painstaking, fastidious undertaking born of a visceral detestation of falsehood, in particular when it is put in the service of power and human life hangs in the balance.”  He writes that “Gaza is about a Big Lie composed of a thousand, often seemingly abstruse and arcane, little lies.

The Palestinian People Are Not Fooled Anymore

As a Palestinian, I am skeptical about Mahmoud Abbas’s address, billed by the press as “Abbas delivers rare address at UNSC meeting”, which calls for two states. Whereas I believe that BDS goals can be achieved through more than one political accommodation, including a two-state scenario in historic Palestine as a solution to its violent partition in 1948, I am skeptical about[Read More...]

Canadian MPs Take Lobby-Sponsored Trips to Israel

It is no secret to anyone that in the United States, the people are governed by powerful lobby groups. The strength of the National Rifle Association (NRA) is so great that government officials are able to overlook the shooting deaths of countless innocent children, as young as 5 years old, along with their teachers in their own classrooms. The bloated defense budget, which comes at the expense of social services and infrastructure, is the result of powerful lobby groups.
