Just a little over a week after an Environmental Working Group (EWG) report showed that potentially unsafe levels of glyphosate had been discovered in oat products, including Cheerios, General Mills (the maker of Cheerios) has been slapped with a lawsuit. The company has decided to remove the phrase “Made with 100% Natural Whole Grain Oats” from the labels of its Nature Valley granola bars.
A report published August 15 by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) shows how some oat products, including oat cereals, oatmeals, and granola and snack bars, contain unsafe levels of glyphosate – a chemical in the controversial weedkiller Roundup.
Nearly 3/4 of the oat products tested by the EWG contained higher levels of glyphosate than what the group’s scientists have deemed “protective of children’s health,” the report reveals.
A California federal judge has ruled that General Mills may continue to label its Nature Valley granola bars as “natural,” despite tests which showed they contained traces of the chemical glyphosate, the main ingredient in the herbicide RoundUp and a multitude of other weedkillers. [1]
After finding that growers who sprayed their grain crops with glyphosate ended up with an inferior product, Grain Millers, Inc. announced that it will avoid buying western Canadian oats that have been treated with the herbicide.

Major oat buyer Grain Millers, based in Western Canada, announced that it will no longer source oats that have been coated with glyphosate.
“In an April 20 memo to Prairie oat growers, Grain Millers said the new policy was ‘driven by functional performance attributes of finished products manufactured from oats known to have been treated with glyphosate and by customer demand.’ [1]
