A North Carolina policeman has been detained after shooting dead an unarmed African-American man, who was trying to get help following a car crash.
On Saturday morning, three police officers in Charlotte, NC responded to a 911 call from a woman, who said that an unknown male was knocking on the door of her house, the local media reports.
A few days ago we mentioned a brighter side of what's going on in North Carolina, Cecil Bothwell's reelection campaign. As Reid Wilson pointed out in his Washington Post column yesterday, the fascist-controlled Art Pope legislature really is wrecking the state government.
Remember when Wisconsin was the model state for the GOP's jihad against democracy? Things have calmed down there a bit. And North Carolina has taken over the spotlight entirely. But wherever the cloud is darkest, there is always the most room for rays of sunshine. Our old friend Cecil Bothwell is certainly a bright ray of sunshine in the Carolina gloom right now. The Asheville City Councilmember was voted first place “Best Local Politician” by city voters in the annual Mountain Xpress “Best of WNC” poll-- for the fourth year in a row.
For decades you could ask any progressive who the most evil and dangerous man in North Carolina was and the overwhelming response would have been "Jesse Helms" or, just plain "Jesse," a former ConservaDem-- very much like today's ConservaDems-- who finally switched to the Republican Party, just like Strom Thurmond and most of the racist trash from the garbage heap of the pre-Voting Rights Act southern Democratic parties.
Howard Coble first won his North Carolina congressional seat in 1984, narrowly beating a freshman Democrat by riding Ronald Reagan's formidable coattails. The rematch in '86 was even tighter but Coble won, 72,329 to 72,250... 79 votes! Coble, a pretty mainstream conservative has never had a close call again. The longest-serving congressmember in North Carolina history, no opponent has ever reached 40% against him.

U.S. law states that if a democratically-elected government is overthrown in a military coup, U.S. aid stops until democracy is restored. After the Egyptian military coup against Morsi, Congress and Obama were complicit in breaking the law, while U.S. corporate media cheered. Above, Rachel Maddow reports on the anti-Choice sneak attack in North Carolina this week. The Republicans in the legislature don't like seeing Texas and Ohio Republicans getting ahead of them in the right-wing anti-women jihad. Most interesting though (at the 4:55 point in the video) was a clip from an election debate when now-Governor Pat McCrory publicly pledged to sign no new abortion restrictions if he were elected.
Governments by nature tend towards the authoritarian. Even when a liberalish type, like Obama, is elected, its almost inevitable that when something like Ed Snowden happens, the government errs on the side of repression. All governments. European governments are either flipping out or feigning flipping out over Snowden's revelations that the U.S. was relentlessly spying on all of our allies all the time. But have any of these any governments agreed to give Snowden political refuse from the American gulag which is looking to devour him?
