Matthew Raphael Johnson on Codreanu and the Iron Guard

After many, many requests, Matthew Raphael Johnson has finally done a podcast on the Iron Guard, the political vehicle for the ideas of Corneliu Zelea Codreanu (1899-1938) in interwar Romania. Primarily, it is about the ideology of the movement and its policies during the brief reign of the “Legionary Government” in 1940.

Traditionalism on Trial

A trial has been set by a faction of the Autonomous Orthodox Metropolia of the Americas. The defendant is Matthew Raphael Johnson, suddenly deemed too far right for this tiny synod’s image. The promoter of this purge is Bishop Joseph (Royer) of Canada, a new bishop received into the church just two years ago. Up until now, Johnson’s “Orthodox Nationalist” podcast and writings were followed by synod members with full support. Something changed.
Bishop Joseph is on the far left. This seems to be a lot of bishops for 100 people.

Eastern & Western Theology: Trailer Parks in Heaven (Jay on Boiler Room)

On this Boiler Room we expanded the concept of coopted cults to cover more mainline religious movements and their use by the state or other entities. Branco Malic and I engage in a friendly, civil exchange concerning Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic differences. We also cover bizarre TV preachers and their notorious scams.

Russian “Nationalist” Vladimir Zhirinovsky is a Fraud

In the 1990s, the “voice of Russian nationalism” was Vladimir Zhirinovsky.  I was not the first to notice that his antics and incoherence was working in favor of Yeltsin. His real name is Edelstein. The consummate showman, he would appear whenever Yeltsin was in trouble or the opposition against him in the west grew. He would scream something about “nuking New York” for no reason, usually while in a speedo. This happened so many times that it was clear they were working together.

The Artistic Representation of War and Peace, Politics and the Global Crisis

Contemporary art is often criticised as pointless or overvalued by art market elites. Even the word ‘artist’ has lost much of its meaning. The many ongoing global socio-political crises seem to make even the idea of art fade into insignificance. Most art either reflects local reality (landscapes, cityscapes, portraits) or internal ‘reality’ (surrealism, conceptual art). But there are artists (in this case, I will focus on painters) who do not shy away from depicting the difficulties facing ordinary people or the elites who create those difficulties in the first place.
