While the current Liberal government claims to be progressive and in favour of a rules-based international order, promotion of democracy and world peace, its actions regarding Iran demonstrate that the primary drivers of Canadian foreign policy remain US geo-political interests and the interests of the rich and powerful.

Washington — (Analysis) Meng Wanzhou, the Chief Financial Officer of Chinese telecommunications titan Huawei, appeared in Canadian court on Tuesday to fight her extradition to the United States. If she is extradited, she will face fresh charges issued by the U.S. Justice Department (DoJ) accusing Meng and Huawei of engaging in bank fraud and trade theft, as well as violating U.S. sanctions against Iran.
Canada’s fealty to the rule of law is much spoken of nowadays by Liberal politicians in regards to a current pending extradition request made by the United States to Canada. Canada became embroiled in the international trade spat between the US and China when it arrested Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of telecommunications giant Huawei at the behest of the US government.
Once again Canada clearly signals its vassal status in relations with the U.S. The recent arrest and detention of Meng Wanzhou, Huawei Technologies’ chief financial officer, demonstrates fully Canadian compliance with U.S. desires.
