Often, in politics victories are far and in between. Here at Blue America, we don't pick candidates because we assess them as having the best chance to win. We pick them because we think they'll do the best job in office if they do win.

Anselm Weber and Rachel Brown are a progressive couple in Southwest Florida who have organized for voter registration and around issues of sensible drug policy, voter rights restoration, $15 minimum wage, Medicaid expansion, and climate action. Rachel Brown is running for the Florida Senate District 27 and Anselm Weber is running for Florida House District 76.

COVID-Don with COVID-RonOn Friday, Governor Ron DeSantis and the Republican-dominated state legislature gave Florida 11,433 new corfimed COVID cases. Yesterday it was 10,360 more, bringing the ghastly total to 254,511 (11,850 per million Floridians). Also on Friday Governor Greg Abbott and his Republican-dominated state legislature gave Texas 10,063 new cases.

Back in May when Blue America endorsed Angie Nixon for a Jacksonville-based state legislative seat, much of our decision was based on the wretched incumbent, arguably the worst member of the Florida legislature. Since then, we have gotten to know Angie better.

I hope you're aware that Blue America is helping with an effort to remake the disastrous Florida Democratic Party as a real vehicle for real change. we're supporting an effort to flip the state legislature, for example, by having candidates for every seat, something the state party has opposed-- although is happy to claim some of the credit for now that it's a fait accompli.

On Friday, Florida reported 8,942 new cases of COVID-19, the highest one day increase for the state... until Saturday, when Florida reported 9,585 new cases. Even before Sunday, active cases went from 97,943 to 132,545.

My friends don't usually run for office. I become friends with some when they are already running; it's a side-effect of my new profession. But this is different. Bob's an old friend. And he's running for the Florida state legislature in a south Florida swing district that the Democratic Party had decided to ignore and just hand to the GOP... again.

A famous poem by T.S. Eliot states that the world would not end with a bang, but with a whimper. Well, it looks like that is how democracy could end as well. If you listen carefully, you can hear that whimper being carried to your ears by a soft, South Florida ocean breeze.This cycle-- once again-- a battle for the soul of democracy is being waged in Florida.Florida Senate District 39 stretches from Key West through the Florida Keys and up into South Miami-Dade.

Fatally-flawed Florida Democratic Party boss Gary FarmerFlorida's 27th senatorial district-- most of Lee County and all of Fort Myers and Cape Coral-- is safely red. There are 197,866 registered Republicans, 128,204 registered Democrats and 139,293 others (mostly independents). In 2016 Lee County voters backed Trump over Hillary, 58.7% to 38.3%.

Yesterday we talked briefly about Florida state Rep. Kimberly Daniels, one of the worst "Democrats" we've run across in many years. As I mentioned, Blue America has endorsed the progressive Democrat running for Daniels' seat this cycle, Angie Nixon.
