The man who stands accused of planning the recent Barcelona terrorist attack which killed 15 was a convicted drug trafficker whose nefarious activities were well known by the Spanish authorities.
This is just another confirmation of the dangerous links between the illegal international narcotics trade and deadly terrorism.

On August 8, following a meeting with Trump, Health and Human Services secretary Tom Price said that such a declaration was unnecessary, but said that all options were on the table, including a declaration of emergency. [2]
It is unclear what sparked the reversal.

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Public Health studied 1,099 young adults between the ages of 21 and 25 over 5 years. They found that those who drank highly caffeinated drinks over time had a significantly higher risk of using cocaine, non-prescription stimulants, and of developing an alcohol use disorder by age 25. [1]

Nearly 33,000 of those deaths involved opioids, including prescription painkillers and heroin. In a report published December 8, 2016, the CDC said that in 2015, heroin deaths spiked by more than 2,000 cases since 2014, resulting in a sad milestone: There were more heroin-related deaths that year than gun homicides. As recently as 2007, gun homicides outnumbered heroin deaths by more than 5 to 1. [1]

Iran appears to be on the verge of overhauling its drug-related policies. While a new bill is being amended in parliament to stop the execution of petty drug smugglers, another plan is also under study for allowing state organs to distribute drugs — primarily opium — among addicts, the Radio Fard reported.
