DETROIT — Nearly 50,000 students headed back to school in Detroit, Michigan will be greeted by bottled water this year in lieu of traditional drinking fountains and water faucets, after tests showed elevated levels of lead and copper in the water.

A new UN report has found that two billion people around the world do not have access to clean drinking water. However, the report covers just a small part of the global population and fails to address the impact that war and corporate profiteering have had on drinking water access.

On October 19, 13-year-old student Maanasa Mendu was awarded the grand prize in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for developing a cost-effective device that uses solar and wind power to create energy. [1]
Her “solar leaves” device earned her the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist,” as well as a $25,000 prize.
