Instead of releasing asylum sekers, the Department of Homeland Security will have the authority to detain them indefinitely. The effect is expected to discourage new migrants because they will not be able to work and send money to their country of origin if they are imprisoned.

She was heavily criticized and harassed for enforcing the separation of families at the border before the policy was changed. She has been replaced by Acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan, the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection who served as its deputy commissioner under Obama.

25,000 South American migrants were apprehended in November of this year compared to 7,000 in November 2017. Apprehended does not mean sent back. This week, at least 400 illegal aliens were transported to a bus station in El Paso, Texas, and released.

Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) questioned why the caravan was deployed just before the midterm election, as deportation and separating children from parents who cross into the US illegally is a hot-button issue.  Gaetz also suggested George Soros and NGOs funded the scheme.
