Today’s Poor People’s Campaign: Too Important Not to Criticize

On the progressive website OpEdNews (OEN), I recently posted a QuickLink to an article published in Black Agenda Report by its managing editor Bruce Dixon. Seeking to get Dixon’s piece maximal attention, I titled my framing introduction to it “The Most Important Political Article in Ages.” Despite the appearance of advertising puffery, I was not exaggerating.

Corey Robin, a political science professor at Brooklyn College, wrote a phenomenal book I read some years ago-- and talked a lot about here at DWT-- The Reactionary Mind. Musing aloud last month for Salon, Robin let his readers know what Bill and Hillary Clinton mean to him: "Sister Souljah, welfare reform, Ricky Ray Rector and the crime bill." Yeah, not a fan.

The School-To-Prison Pipeline

All my school teacher friends are back at work now. Many sound as excited and optimistic as their charges do. M pal Roland spent a whole day over the weekend at a teacher supply store buying stuff for his kids. He said they're an especially wonderful group this year… but he says that every year. And he means it every year. He already broke my heart with one story though. One of his kids, a little boy living with a foster family, seems tightly wound and ready to fight.
