Tragedy outside Moscow – Airliner crashes in field killing all 71 aboard

A Saratov Airlines plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Moscow’s Domodedevo Airport en route to Orsk, Russia on Sunday, killing all 71 passengers onboard. The plane, an Antonov An-148, appears to have been on fire, according to reports by people who saw it, and the videos of the wreckage show it to be in small pieces scattered over a wide area.  It appears that the plane disintegrated in flight.

A Russian Su-25 warplane was shot down over Syria’s Idlib province in northwestern Syria on Saturday. The pilot safely ejected from his plane, but he was killed by militants on the ground.  This report, corroborated by the Russian Defense Ministry and RIA Novosti specifies events this way (translated and edited from Russian):

On Friday, January 26, Washington DC added 21 Russian and / or Ukrainian national citizens and nine companies to the blacklist of sanctioned people by the US Treasury Department.  The Russian Foreign Ministry opined that this action will only hurt US companies and amounts to just a “show of impotence.”

A Russian Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker fighter plane is reported to have passed extremely close to a US Lockheed P-3C Orion reconnaissance plane over the Black Sea on Monday. The incident, the latest in a series of such flybys reportedly had the Russian fighter jet passing within just five feet of the US plane.
