Bisphenol A, or BPA, is an endocrine disrupting chemical that is ubiquitous within our society. It was removed from baby bottles, sippy cups, and most cans of baby formula a number of years ago. But a recent study found that a lot of food packaging still contains the gender-bending substance.
BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make plastics and resins since the 1960’s. It’s an endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen, and it has been linked to breast cancer, obesity, infertility, early puberty in girls, and increased risk for diabetes.
A recent study published in Environmental Research has stated that many canned goods still have high levels of bisphenol-A (BPA), and consuming them can put our bodies at risk. The new data also points out that some foods expose consumers to higher levels of BPA in their food.
Consumer plastics manufacturers began removing the chemical DEHP from their products about a decade ago, replacing the “probable human carcinogen” with DINP and DIDP, which were believed to be safer. New research shows, however, that the replacement chemicals sitting in for DEHP-free products may be just as dangerous as DEHP itself. [1]
We all really want to avoid the hormone-disrupting chemical bisphenol-A (BPA), but it can be difficult to navigate the grocery store aisles without accidentally putting a brand that still uses BPA in your cart. To help with this, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has released a new report analyzing which brands continue to line their cans with BPA.
The European commission will look into 700 different chemicals to analyze their endocrine disrupting potential.
