Scientists uncovered that some antibiotics help relieve stress and help stop the decline of bacterial populations when they are dying out. In other words, more bacteria survive for longer periods in comparison to populations with no exposure to the antibiotic.

Animal antibiotics and/ or an animal contraceptive were found in food samples from 8 out of 10 popular fast-food chains: McDonald’s, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Burger King, Taco Bell, Dunkin’ Donuts, Wendy’s, and Domino's Pizza. Veterinary drugs were found in all of the samples except for Chipotle and Subway.

While the Global South overprescribes antibiotics, in the West farm animals are pumped full of them, farmers even giving them to healthy animals so they can be packed tighter in ever-increasing herd sizes.

Taking antibiotics for kidney stones is probably a bad idea. A review of almost 300,000 patient records from the United Kingdom (UK) revealed higher rates of kidney stones in people who took 5 categories of oral antibiotics, including broad-spectrum penicillins and fluoroquinolones, which include Cipro. A class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones has been associated with numerous serious side effects over the years, so it’s not uncommon to see the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issue new warnings about more complications of taking the medications. On December 20, the agency yet again warned about a new threat associated with fluoroquinolone antibiotics.

One of the top causes of antibiotic resistance is the use of the medicines in livestock. Many factory farms feed animals antibiotics to prevent disease and promote growth. Yet, despite countless warnings that the practice fuels drug-resistant superbugs, it continues to be a serious problem. Thankfully, establishments such as McDonald’s claims to finally be taking more action against widespread antibiotic use.

Desiccants kill more than plants. Herbicides like glyphosate also kill bacteria, and can act like “antibiotics.” Human gut bacteria are sensitive to antibiotics, which is why we should avoid eating herbicides. When microbes are disturbed, diseases like obesity, Alzheimer’s, or celiac disease can result. Choose organic instead.

In this age of antibiotic resistance, researchers and health experts are warning that doctors need to prescribe significantly fewer antibiotics to prevent an antimicrobial-resistance crisis that could plunge modern medicine back into the Dark Ages.
